Ervin Mitchell Carter, of Pico Rivera, California, was received into Heaven on March 9, 2026.
He was born in 1931, in Pearl, Ill., to John and Lillian Carter. On June 7, 1953, he married Doris Davis, and they shared 57 years of marriage until her passing on October 16, 2010.
Ervin was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Jaxson Keichline; grand-daughter-in-law Skylar Brown; two brothers Virgil and Dean Carter; and five sisters Barbara Hall, Lorraine Mercer, Mary Blish, Betty Bland and Helen Murray. He is survived by his sister, Eileen Pfeiffer, and his brother, Dale Carter.
He was a loving father to his four children: Kenneth Carter and his wife, Angela, of Van Buren, Ark.; Judy Brown of Pico Rivera, Calif.; Donna Carter of Lakewood, Calif.; and Diane Miller of Centerton, Ark. and his niece, Debi Paxton of Blue Eye, Mo.
Ervin was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
A devoted Christian, Ervin was a member of Clara Street First Assembly of God, Full Gospel Assembly of God, and Greenwood Community Church, all in Bell Gardens, Calif.
He began his career as a deckhand on a tugboat along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. In 1956, he moved to California, where he worked as a machinist at Baker Oil Tools in Commerce until his retirement. In his later years, he enjoyed remodeling homes and doing carpentry work.
Ervin had a deep love for working with his hands, whether through woodworking, carpentry, or tinkering with cars. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and grilling as a volunteer with his church for Teen Challenge. In quieter moments, he could often be found relaxing in his recliner, enjoying peanut M&Ms, sipping a Diet Coke, and watching Lakers and Dodgers games. He cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, taking great pride in supporting and encouraging them in their activities, sports, hobbies, and careers.
His friends and family are invited to share happy memories and celebrate Ervin’s life in the way he would want to be remembered – as a loving and caring man who loved God, his family and life.
